Poland wins its first medal at the Beijing Games

On Sunday, February 6, Poland won the first medal at the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Dawid Kubacki won the bronze medal in the ski jumping competition on the normal hill in Zhangjiakou. Ryoyu Kobayashi is the new Olympic champion ahead of Austria’s Manuel Fettner and Poland’s Dawid Kubacki. Kamil Stoch was sixth.

After the first competition round, Ryoyu Kobayashi was in the lead, flying 104.5 meters and at the halfway point he was 6.2 points ahead of Peter Prevc (103 m) from Slovenia. The three-time Polish Olympic champion Kamil Stoch was third with 101.5 meters and was 9.1 points behind the leader. Right behind the Pole were Jewgienij Klimow (104 m) from Russia and Manuel Fettner (102.5 m). Dawid Kubacki (104 m) was eighth, 3.2 points behind Stoch.

In the final series, 25-year-old Kobayashi gained 99.5 meters and became the first Olympic champion from Japan in 24 years in this competition. The silver medal went to Manuel Fettner, who moved up from the fifth position after jumping to 104 meters. In the final series, the Polish world champion from 2019, Dawid Kubacki flew 103 meters and won the bronze medal. The Polish representative was ahead by 0.5 points from Peter Prevc (99.5 m) who finished fourth and by 4.4 points from Yevgeny Klimov (100 m). Kamil Stoch, after a jump of 97.5 meters, finished the competition in the sixth position.

The bronze medal of Dawid Kubacki is the 23rd Olympic medal of the Polish team in the history of competitions at the Winter Olympics, and the tenth medal in ski jumping.
