Poland among the 20 countries with the largest number of publications on Artificial Intelligence

Experts from the Information Processing Center – National Research Institute (OPI PIB) conducted a bibliometric analysis of scientific papers on Artificial Intelligence (AI) published in 2010–2019 on the basis of the Scopus database. The results show that scientists from China published the most works on this subject – 207,000 (28% of world works about AI), followed by the USA – almost 117,000 (16%) and India – almost 72,000 (9.5%). Among European countries, the greatest number of publications was prepared by scientists from Great Britain – 38,000 (5.1%). Poland took 18th place in the world and the 6th among the European Union countries with over 11,000. publications (1.5%).

Dr Eng. Jarosław Protasiewicz, director of OPI PIB emphasizes that “Poland will not overtake the largest countries in terms of the number of publications, but that is not our goal either. According to the Policy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in Poland from 2020, the main task is to enter a small group of 20-25 countries developing AI in the world. It requires a lot of work from us, but we have great experts, so this goal is most achievable. No country can slow down the pace of AI-based work and implementation. Polish results show that every year more and more studies on artificial intelligence are published in our country. The number of publications has been increasing in particular since 2016 and there is no indication that this pace will slow down” – adds the director of OPI PIB.

In the opinion of OPI PIB in Poland, it is worth putting more emphasis on international cooperation within AI research. There were 11 citations per one work in international co-authorship, which is more than twice as many in the case of publications by scientists from exclusively Polish institutions (5 citations). The OPI PIB report shows that in 2010–2019 almost 3,000 works on AI were published in Poland in collaboration with researchers from international centers. Almost one-fifth of the co-authored works were created together with scientists from the United States. A significant percentage of such publications was also completed with Canada (14%) and Great Britain (11%). The works created in cooperation with foreign scientists, however, accounted only for 26% of all Polish AI output.
