Minister of State Assets promises to announce location of Poland’s third nuclear power plant in autumn

“I think that in autumn this year we will know the decision on the location of the third nuclear power plant, the second one being built under a government programme. Belchatow is the most obvious choice, but this still needs to be studied”, said Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin.

Minister Sasin emphasised that renewable energy sources can complement the energy mix but cannot be its foundation.

“The foundation of such a certain energy mix must be nuclear energy. This is the direction we are heading in. Those two investments, which are already becoming a fact, are in the initial process of implementation. We are facing a decision regarding the location of the third nuclear power plant, and the second NPP being built as part of this government programme, implemented by the state”, said Sasin.

According to Sasin, Belchatow is the most obvious place when it comes to the location of the third nuclear power plant.

“But this still requires a lot of research. Certain conditions must be met, e.g. geological, seismic factors, access to water and many such things must be studied at the moment”, he pointed out.

The Polish government indicated in November 2022 that the technology for the first power plant under the Polish Nuclear Power Programme (PPEJ) will be provided by Westinghouse and the plant should be erected in Pomerania. The PPEJ envisages the construction of two power plants in two different locations. According to declarations by government representatives, the issue of selecting the technology and partner for the second power plant within the PPEJ is still open.

“Today we are looking for and working on new possibilities, for example the nuclear option, we are also developing RES. But until we have alternative energy sources, we will not abandon coal. No matter what pressure is put on us – whether at home or abroad. Because the most important thing is energy security and energy for Poles”, the minister stressed.
