Minister for Climate and Environment announced the preliminary location for Poland’s first nuclear power plant

by Dignity News
Asked about the location of the first nuclear power plant in Poland the Minister for Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa said that the preliminary site for the power plant is chosen Lubiatowo in the north of Poland, while detailed work on the second location has not yet started. This is a very long process, since there are aspects such as environmental, transport and safety issues involved”, said Moskwa.

The Lubiatowo location was identified on the basis of detailed environmental and location studies conducted since 2017 showing that it meets all environmental requirements for this type of facility and is safe for local residents, according to the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe.

The coastal location Lubiatowo in the commune of Choczewo (poviat Wejherowski, Pomeranian voivodeship) is the preferred site for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. This does not mean, however, that the power plant will be built there, as Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe still has a number of consultations and environmental studies ahead.

Poland has received an offer from the Americans to build a nuclear power plant. During a meeting with the US ambassador Mark Brzezinski and the president of Westinghouse Poland Mirosław Kowalik, the Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa received a detailed report on the subject.

The Americans want to build six reactors in Poland. The construction of the first would last from 2026 to 2033. The last reactor would be commissioned in 2043. Minister Anna Moskwa said that the government has one month to decide on the offer.

She added that the cost of building Poland’s first nuclear power plant is covered by secrecy, but as she pointed out “it is a big expense due to the huge number of gigawatts produced and the longevity of the technology”.
