US President confirms visit to Poland

by DignityNews.eu

“I will be going to Poland, but I don’t know when”, said US President Joe Biden, in response to a question from Polish Radio correspondent Marek Walkuski on whether he was considering a trip to Poland next month.

Joe Biden’s possible trip to Europe, including Poland, was reported last week by US media, including CNN television, which noted that the trip was not yet confirmed. However, US presidential administration officials said unofficially that one of the stops under consideration was Poland, “a key NATO ally currently hosting thousands of US troops and serving as a hub for Western arms transfers to Ukraine”.

24 February was mentioned as a possible date for the visit. The US president’s trip would then coincide with the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which coincides with that day. However, the details of the visit are still being worked out.

The US president’s last visit to Poland took place a month after the full-scale Russian invasion. At the time, Biden said in a speech he gave in the courtyard of the King’s Castle in Warsaw that Putin “cannot stay in power”.

Joe Biden was visiting Poland on 25-26 March 2022. On the first day of his visit, he met with soldiers from the US 82nd Airborne Division in Rzeszów-Jasionka.

On the following day, the American leader spoke with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda. At that time, he spoke about the role of stability in Europe and close cooperation between Washington and Warsaw. He also assured that his country is committed to the provisions of the North Atlantic Treaty.

“For us, Article 5 is a sacred commitment. I will say it again, it is a sacred commitment and please believe that you can rely on us”, Biden stressed.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty guarantees that an armed attack on one member state will be considered aggression against all.
