by DignityNews.eu

PKP Intercity received the first 8 of the 81 new carriages produced by the H. Cegielski Factory of Rail Vehicles in Poznań. The value of the entire contract is almost PLN 700 million, and its implementation is part of the largest investment program in the company’s history. The remaining vehicles will enhance the national carrier’s fleet by the end of this year.

Modern carriages adapted to the speed of 200 km per hour will be attached to the InterCity and Express InterCity trains, which will be operated from Warsaw to Wrocław, Zakopane, Berlin, Kraków and Gdynia. They will also appear on rails from Gdynia and Krakow to Berlin.

In the new carriages, passengers will benefit from comfortable seats, air conditioning, a passenger information system and closed-circuit toilets. Each place will have access to an electric socket and individual lighting. In addition, cell signal amplifiers and wireless internet devices will be installed.

The company also received the first two modernized universal diesel locomotives of the new SU4220 series. The modernization increased the safety of the locomotive’s operation, as well as its reliability. In total, the national carrier will receive 13 such vehicles.

The modernization is co-financed under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program 2014 – 2020. As part of the recently expanded investment strategy until 2030, the company will allocate PLN 27 billion to modern rolling stock and environmentally-friendly railway stations.
