A group of Polish scientists has created an innovative product that is a non-invasive alternative to gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The device, which is just 11 mm wide and 23 mm long, can make a real revolution in gastrology. The capsule will take pictures and transmit them to the doctor by itself, according to the website of medtech BioCam, the developer of the device.
The BioCam solution is a remote and non-contact system for the diagnosis of the digestive system by means of capsule endoscopy. The patient swallows a capsule, which passes passively through the digestive tract thanks to peristaltic movements while images of the small intestine are taken. Meanwhile, the data are transmitted to a recording device that the patient wears on a belt around his or her waist.
The entire tool consists of interconnected and cooperating components: the capsule (hardware), the image analysis software (software) and the telemedicine platform. The most essential part of the environment is the capsule-probe, consisting of a camera, a microprocessor, a module responsible for wireless communication, position and temperature sensors and a battery. The whole is enclosed in a special biocompatible envelope.
It is sufficient for the fasting patient to swallow the capsule, allowing the capsule to ‘travel’ through the digestive system and record the state of his or her digestive system on film. The system will then detect any abnormalities on the basis of this recording. Importantly, the test can be carried out at home and is fully remote – the capsule/probe can be delivered by courier.
BioCam is currently developing improved image analysis software and a cloud-based telemedicine platform. Its plans for the coming years include commercialisation of the solution, mainly in Central and Eastern Europe.
