The Information Processing Centre (OPI) has prepared a new report on publication achievements regarding artificial intelligence. This time, the institute’s experts focused on scientific publications in science and technology prepared between 2010 and 2021.

The researchers focused on areas that are actively developing artificial intelligence as well as applying it to solve specific problems. The results of the research contained in the report show that between 2010 and 2021, as many as 949,000 publications on AI were published worldwide in science and technology, of which 13,959 were prepared or created with the participation of researchers from Polish centres. Thus, Poland ranked fifth in terms of the number of publications among the 27 EU countries.

Between 2010 and 2021, a total of 949,000 AI publications were identified in the Scopus database within science and technology. The largest number of papers were by authors from China (257,000), the United States (140,000) and India (105,000). Together, they accounted for 45 % of global publications on the topic.

Among EU27 countries, researchers from Germany (36.9 thousand), France (28.6 thousand), Italy (27.9 thousand) and Spain (26.6 thousand) produced the most publications on AI in science and technology between 2010 and 2021. “Poland ranked high, in fifth place, with almost 14,000 scientific papers”, says Dr Marzena Feldy, head of the Statistical Analysis Laboratory at the OPI.

Most papers were published by researchers from technical universities, such as the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (1 358), the Warsaw University of Technology (1 292), the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (1 256) and the Silesian University of Technology (1 144). Works by scientists from these institutions accounted for 27 % of all AI publications in science and technology prepared in Poland.
