Poland to send diplomatic note to Germany on reparations in a few weeks

“Instructed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing this note. Our experts, lawyers, as well as diplomats from the European policy department are working on it”, says Marcin Przydacz, deputy foreign minister.

Following the presentation of a report that shows and estimates Poland’s losses suffered under German occupation during World War II, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the preparation and sending of a diplomatic note to Germany.

Deputy Minister Przydacz assured that as soon as the note is ready, “we will forward it to the Prime Minister for assessment and then to the German side expecting a constructive response”.

At the same time, he stressed that the Polish side “hopes that the Polish-German dialogue on historical issues will be constructive and not an emotional reaction to matters important to all Poles”.

He also pointed out that although “Germany feels responsible for causing World War II”, this feeling cannot be followed only by words, but should also by a reaction in the form of a constructive discussion on reparations.

The deputy head of the foreign ministry explained that a diplomatic note is no longer a journalistic discourse or a political or parliamentary discussion.

With its issuance, the state concerned presents its position in an official manner and naturally expects a response from the state, in this case Germany,” added Marcin Przydacz and informed that “the preparation of this note is a matter of a few weeks”.

It should be recalled that in the war loss report presented on 1 September, the amount of damage caused to Poland by Germany as a result of the Second World War was set at 6 trillion 220 billion 609 million PLN.
