Poland is the EU third-largest producer of maize

by DignityNews.eu

According to the estimates of the Central Statistical Office, Poland produced about 7.5 million tons of corn in 2021. Thus, Poland has become the third producer of maize in the European Union, after France and Romania, with an 11% share in EU production. The greatest amount of maize is grown in the Wielkopolskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Mazowieckie and Dolnośląskie voivodships.

In Poland, maize began to be cultivated relatively recently. At the end of the 1990s, the area of maize was about 100 thousand ha. After Poland joined the European Union, the growing popularity of maize was noted.

In 2013–2019, the cultivation area and harvest of maize were significantly greater than in the previous years. The average area in this period was 0.6–0.7 million ha, and the harvest was around 4 million tonnes. In 2020, the area of grain maize cultivation increased to over 0.9 million ha, which, with good average yields, allows to harvest 6.8 million tons of corn. In 2021, according to the data of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture, the corn cultivation acreage amounted to a record 1.7 million ha. The greatest amount of maize is grown in the following provinces: Wielkopolskie (20% of the sown area in 2020), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (14%), Mazowieckie (11%) and Dolnośląskie (10%).
