More than 2.5 million refugees entered Poland from Ukraine

by Dignity News
Since February 24, 2.5 million people from Ukraine have entered Poland. Yesterday, on April 4, the border officers received 18.5 thousand people. This is a decrease of 17%, compared to the day before, informs the Border Guard on Twitter.

“In recent days, the number of people coming to Poland has dropped sharply, and it amounts to approximately 20 thousand people a day. This shows that the number is much lower than before”, said Paweł Szefernaker, the deputy minister of internal affairs and administration, government plenipotentiary for war refugees from Ukraine.

He stated, that more than half of the refugees from Ukraine registered in the PESEL database are children, and over 40% are women aged 19-65. Only 3% of the war refugees coming to Poland are men.

So far, nearly 650,000 PESEL numbers have been issued to refugees from Ukraine.

“They are people who want to stay in Poland, learn and work here, and I think that until the end of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, they will lead a safe life here”, said Deputy Minister Szafernaker.

In his opinion, the issue of assigning a PESEL number is a great example of the fact that cooperation between the government and local government can bring good results.

“This is an action that is carried out in local governments, it was a commissioned task, prepared very quickly by the government. This cooperation is possible, it shows that together we can do more” he added.
