Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Committee for National Security and Defense Affairs Jarosław Kaczyński together with Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Petr Fiala and Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Janša on Tuesday 15 March will come to Kyiv as representatives of the European Council for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on Facebook “Today, on the 20th day of Putin’s criminal aggression against Ukraine, together with Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Fiala and Prime Minister of Slovenia Janša, we are going to Kyiv to show Ukrainians our solidarity.”
The Polish prime minister recalled the words of President Lech Kaczyński: “Today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow the Baltic states, and then maybe it’s time for my country, for Poland.”
Morawiecki quoted former Polish President Lech Kaczyński, who said those words in the Georgian capital Tbilisi in 2008 when the country also faced aggression by Russia. “His visit then changed the perception of this war, and a great act of courage gave Georgians a spirit and is still remembered around the world until today,” wrote Morawiecki.
The visit of the leaders of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia was organized in consultation with the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The purpose of the visit is to confirm the unequivocal support of the entire European Union for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine and to present a broad package of support for the Ukrainian state and society.
Michał Dworczyk, the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, revealed at the press conference, that the visit had been prepared for many days, but kept strictly confidential. The politicians went to Kyiv by train from Przemyśl and at around 8:30 am they crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border.
On the night of Monday to Tuesday (March 14/15), Prime Minister Morawiecki held last talks with the leaders of the European Union: Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen discussing on the details of the support package for Ukraine in Kyiv.
“The decision to meet Ukrainians in Kyiv was made at the Versailles summit among the most important European leaders. Then Prime Minister Morawiecki, in coordination with Deputy Prime Minister Kaczyński, prepared this visit,” said Dworczyk.
The head of the Prime Minister’s Office noted, that this morning Polish diplomats submitted official information about this delegation to international organizations. This precise information was provided to the secretaries-general of NATO, the OSCE, the UN and our American partners.
