Great leap in exports. Polish trade with Ukraine increases

The value of exports of goods from Poland to Ukraine increased by 113.3 % last year compared to 2022. The value of imports from Ukraine increased by 72.2 % in that period. Detailed data on Poland’s trade exchange with Ukraine was prepared for the Rzeczpospolita daily by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). 

“The GUS had already reported that the value of our exports to our eastern neighbour at the time reached PLN 51.7 billion, a year-on-year increase of over 113%. The value of imports amounted to 20.3 bln PLN with annual dynamics of 72.2%. The balance of trade with Ukraine was therefore positive for Poland, as in previous years, reaching a record level of 31.4 bln PLN in 2023.

The Central Statistical Office data shows that in terms of value, the most important items in exports were fuels and mineral oils and products of their distillation (PLN 9.7 bln), crude oil and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (PLN 7.3 bln), alcohol and tobacco (PLN 2.7 bln), machines and mechanical devices, as well as electronic equipment (PLN 6.4 bln), vehicles, aircraft and vessels (PLN 6.3 bln), as well as arms and ammunition (PLN 5.8 bln).

The largest increase in exports compared to 2022 was for aircraft (442 %), locomotives, rolling stock, parts, fittings, track components and signalling equipment (307.9 %), alcohol and tobacco (128.8 %), fertilisers (146.8 %), as well as explosives, pyrotechnics, and matches (420.5 %). The value of exports of arms and ammunition increased by 147 % year-on-year.

In the case of imports, the highest value was for base metals (PLN 4.6 billion), products of plant origin (PLN 2.3 billion), including cereals (just over PLN 1 billion), vegetable and animal fats and oils (PLN 2.8 billion), prepared foodstuffs, non-alcoholic beverages, alcohol and tobacco (PLN 2.3 billion), metal ores and slag (PLN 1.8 billion), wood and wood products, cork, straw products (PLN 1.5 billion).
