First year without Russian gas

by Dignity News

2023 was the first year without gas imports from Russia. Foreign supplies of this raw material to Poland, carried out by ORLEN, amounted to about 14.1 bcm. The total volume of gas imported by the Company last year was slightly higher than in 2022, when it amounted to about 13.9 bcm. Supplies to Polish customers were supplemented by domestic gas production, which totalled over 3.3 bcm.

One of the main sources of foreign gas acquisition by ORLEN Group last year was LNG supplies. ORLEN made full use of the reserved capacity of the Świnoujście gas port, to which a record 62 shipments of liquefied natural gas were delivered, with a total volume equivalent to approximately 6.5 billion cubic metres of gas. This is almost 46 % of all gas imports to Poland. Fuel from LNG deliveries satisfied domestic demand for this raw material in approximately 38 %. By comparison, the share of liquefied gas in ORLEN’s import structure in 2022 was 43 % with 58 deliveries, with a total volume equivalent to approximately 6 bcm of gas.

Another pillar of gas deliveries to Poland in 2023, was the transmission via the Baltic Pipe pipeline. ORLEN took delivery of some 6.2 bcm of natural gas via this route, which accounted for almost 44 % of last year’s blue fuel imports to Poland. This allowed ORLEN to satisfy approximately 36 % of the domestic demand for gas. The raw material transported via the Baltic Pipe came both from ORLEN Group’s own production in Norway and from deliveries made on the basis of agreements signed with contractors operating on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Supplies from the western and southern directions, as well as from Lithuania, complemented the LNG and gas transported via Baltic Pipe. From the western and southern directions, they amounted to more than 0.9 bcm in 2023 and accounted for approximately 6.5 % of total imports.

From the eastern direction, the Company imported a total of 0.4 bcm in 2023, comprising 0.2 bcm from Lithuania and 0.2 bcm from Ukraine.
