Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Gróbarczyk said that the navigation channel through the Vistula Spit will be launched in the second half of this year.

He emphasized that a current challenge is the setup of watertight gates. “It is probably the first such investment to be implemented in Poland. Therefore, it is risky to specify a date, but everything indicates that at the end of this year the first ships will pass through the Vistula Spit” – said the deputy minister.

In Gróbarczyk’s opinion, the construction of the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit is of great political and geopolitical importance. All activities will have a huge impact on the development of Eastern Poland that has never had and would never have had a chance for it before. It will also develop the port of Elbląg, which was dead for many, many years.

The deputy minister expressed his hope that the first ships through the canal on the Vistula Spit would pass this year. It will start a new stage in the development of the Vistula Lagoon.

Not only the port of Elbląg but also other towns like Frombork, Tolkmicko, Nowa Pasłęka, Kąty Rybackie will have the opportunity to develop in various areas. The canal will bring new industries, tourism, regional development, and the possibility of obtaining investments as an opportunity for the economy of ports.

Asked about the date of launching the channel, the deputy head of the Ministry of Infrastructure explained that he could not yet give the exact time, but only an approximate period and it is the second half of the year.
