An agreement for pre-design work on a nuclear power plant was signed at the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy between Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and Westinghouse Electric Company and Westinghouse Electric Poland (Westinghouse).

The agreement was signed in the presence of Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa and US Ambassador Mark Brzezinski by PEJ CEO Tomasz Stępień, Westinghouse Poland CEO Mirosław Kowalik and Westinghouse Energy Systems Division head David Durham.

“We have decided to implement and make a success of a key project for Poland’s energy security, which is the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland. A project that is being built with a stable and experienced partner and is part of Polish-American cooperation,’ Minister Moskwa said at a press conference.

The signed agreement comprises 10 main areas, including the development of a detailed model for the implementation of the investment, the preparation of a safety assessment, a quality control programme, and the identification of potential suppliers, with an emphasis on Polish companies. The agreement is expected to allow PEJ and Westinghouse to begin initial pre-design work.

“Today we are experiencing a celebration of Poland’s energy security. We can imagine that in 2015, 2016, when major energy investments such as Baltic Pipe were planned, similar celebrations were held in this preparation for 2021-2023. Today, considering 2030, 2031, 2032 and all the years that follow, we have taken decisions to implement and bring to completion and to success, a key project for Poland’s energy security”, said Minister Moskwa.

The head of the climate and environment ministry added that the signing of the agreement is the next stage of cooperation between the energy companies and pledged that another agreement will be signed later this year.
