The mining company KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. will join forces with the Australian company South32 in the Sierra Gorda copper mine in Chile. South32 will replace KGHM’s partners – Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd and Sumitomo Corporation.

From February 22, 2022, KGHM has obtained a new partner in Sierra Gorda SCM. After the closing of the sale of all shares in the Chilean mine by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation, the Australian mining group South32 took over the shares.

Marcin Chludziński, president of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A emphasizes, that Sierra Gorda is a demanding and at the same time very rewarding project. KGHM puts a lot of effort and attention to reverse the long-term trend and achieve the desired effect. The results of the mine after 3 years of intensive work on the project are impressive. It was the first time that positive cash flows came to Poland from abroad. KGHM achieved this by changing the management method and consistency in implementing corrective solutions. With the new partner, the company will continue its development activities and, as a result, increase the value of the mine.

The new partner of the Polish company in Sierra Gorda is a global mining and metallurgical company based in Perth, Australia. South32 has a diversified portfolio of mining projects with manufacturing facilities in Australia, South Africa and South America. The company produces, among others aluminum, alumina, metallurgical carbon, manganese, nickel, silver, lead and zinc.
