Gaz-System receives environmental decision for FSRU terminal in Gdansk Bay

by Dignity News

The Regional Director for Environmental Protection in Gdansk has issued a decision on the environmental conditions of the project “Implementation of an FSRU terminal with a subsea gas pipeline within the basin of the Port of Gdansk”, informs Gaz-System. The decision has the status of immediate enforceability.

The construction of the FSRU terminal in Gdansk is an investment programme implemented by Gaz-System, which has been divided into offshore and onshore parts. The first part involves the construction of a quay in the Bay of Gdańsk, to which the FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit), i.e. a vessel adapted for the regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG), will be permanently moored, as well as a subsea gas pipeline connecting the terminal with the land part.

The second part of the investment is the construction of the Gustorzyn – Gdańsk gas pipeline, through which gas after regasification will be distributed across the country. The onshore part of the project already has a set of decisions necessary to start construction.

“We implement our projects by balancing technological and environmental issues. Reducing the environmental impact is a priority for all investments, especially those carried out in areas of such natural value as the Gulf of Gdansk. Therefore, we will make efforts to reduce the impact of the FSRU terminal and the offshore gas pipeline on the environment as much as possible and to preserve the landscape values of the place”, said Gaz-System CEO Sławomir Hinc.

The company will carry out a number of measures to reduce the environmental impact of the construction and operation of the FSRU terminal – most notably, the excavation-free crossing of Stogi beach by the gas pipeline connecting the FSRU terminal to land. The offshore part of the pipeline will be laid under the bottom of the Bay and the process quay will be located approximately 3 km from the shore. The construction and operation of the infrastructure will also not affect the accessibility of the waters of the Bay of Gdansk for sailors using the marina in Górki Zachodnie.
