The Senate of the University of Warsaw (UW) has unanimously adopted a study programme for the medical faculty. According to the plan, the education of future physicians at the UW will begin from the 2023/2024 academic year. Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski handed over a symbolic cheque to the university for PLN 40 million in government bonds for the creation of a medical faculty.
The Faculty of Medicine at the UW will be a six-year, single master’s degree programme with an all-academic profile, conducted in a full-time form. The innovativeness of the curriculum of the medical faculty at UW lies in the orientation of education towards the scientific and research development of students and the humanisation of medicine. Its primary objective is to put the patients and their needs at the centre of medicine. Issues of humanisation of medicine include multidimensional aspects of bioethics and its practical applications, psychological and sociological conditions of medical practice, including communication with the patient and the environment, as well as organisational issues related to the functioning of the health care system.
The training of future doctors will start on 1 October 2023 after obtaining a permit from the Minister of Education and Science to conduct the studies (a formal application in this regard will be submitted at the beginning of 2023). The studies will be conducted in Polish.
In the future, it is planned to launch medical studies in English, as well as further fields of study, postgraduate studies and other forms of education in the area of medical and health sciences.
The Faculty of Medicine existed at the University of Warsaw between 1816 and 1949, but its tradition dates back to 1809, when the School of Medicine was established in Warsaw alongside the School of Law. It was one of the first five faculties of the University of Warsaw.
