On 20-21 October in Brussels, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will attend a formal meeting of the European Council. The summit will focus on the current situation on the energy market. EU leaders will also discuss preparations for the December EU summit and how to respond to the current crisis. “Continued support for Ukraine is another topic that will be discussed at the meeting”, reported government spokesman Piotr Müller.

The talks will focus on the current situation in the energy market, with particular attention to the issue of energy prices and maintaining security of supply. The issue of measures proposed by the European Commission for the reform of the EU energy market and the security of energy infrastructure will also be raised, in the context of the sabotage targeted at the NordStream gas pipeline.

Poland proposes far-reaching changes to the EU energy market, which should take into account the circumstances of individual Member States. It also stresses the role of the ETS in shaping energy prices, calling for a freeze on allowance prices and the introduction of effective mechanisms to limit their growth.

The European Council will also hold a debate on the economic situation and how to respond to the current inflation crisis, including high energy prices.

EU leaders will address Russian aggression against Ukraine, including Russia’s recent missile attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, as well as its actions at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. The leaders will also discuss economic, military, financial and humanitarian support for Ukraine, as well as the country’s post-war reconstruction.

Poland backs increased support for the Ukrainian armed forces and the establishment of an EU military training and advisory mission for Ukraine, in which Poland has pledged significant involvement.
