The Council of Ministers has adopted a resolution on the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. “The power plant will be built by the US company Westinghouse in the northern part of the country. Construction is expected to begin in 2026”, announced Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

According to Prime Minister Morawiecki, during its meeting, the Council of Ministers decided to establish the first nuclear power plant in Poland in the northern part of the country.

The investor has identified the site between Lubiatów and Kopalin in Pomerania as the preferred location, but the environmental decision will be very important in this case. The nuclear project will be carried out using proven and safe technology in cooperation with the US company Westinghouse.

The head of government said that this is an investment in a nuclear power system that will have beneficial and long-lasting effects for Poland.

“After Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we have to make decisions regarding a stable source of electricity supply for Polish citizens and Polish companies. Nuclear power plants are the safety fuse of our energy system”, said the Prime Minister and stressed that they will serve all Poles for decades.

The Minister for Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, present at the conference, said that full documentation for the environmental decision has already been submitted.

“Transboundary consultations are ongoing, the water opinion has already been obtained, the maritime opinion, next year there will be an environmental decision, then the construction permit issued by the President of the State Atomic Energy Agency and the full construction permit, so, in 2026 the construction will start, and in 2033 the first reactor and consequently subsequent reactors will be built”, enumerated Minister Moskwa.

During the conference, the head of the government announced that Poland is ready for a second project, which will involve the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland by a Korean entrepreneur with the participation of Polish companies, and signalled readiness for a third project in central Poland.
