“This afternoon, President Andrzej Duda has invited the Prime Minister and ministers to a meeting at the National Security Office. The President will want to discuss the current security situation and allied policies related to the war in Ukraine”, announced on Twitter Jacek Siewiera, head of the National Security Bureau (BBN).
It will be recalled that meetings at the BBN with the participation of the President, the Prime Minister and ministers responsible for national defence, foreign affairs and internal affairs in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine have been held since February 2022. In addition to the situation in Ukraine, some briefings were also focused on energy security or the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war.
On Friday, 6 January, the Wall Street Journal, citing the head of the Polish Institute of International Affairs Slawomir Debski, reported that “the Polish government is considering a request from Ukraine to send it its Leopard 2 tanks”.
Poland has more than 240 German Leopard 2 tanks in various versions, and they have modified armour that protects them much better against anti-tank missiles.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, referring to this information, did not rule out such a possibility, but indicated that an agreement with other NATO countries is needed on the matter. ‘We are holding talks that would move towards building a broader coalition of countries that could transfer this heavy, modern equipment’, added the Prime Minister.
The supply of heavy equipment was also not ruled out by German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck. A few days ago, Germany confirmed that it would transfer Patriot system batteries to Poland and Ukraine. Importantly, the number of batteries to be sent to Poland will not be reduced for delivery to Ukraine.
