Polish-Spanish intergovernmental consultations

Border security, the war in Ukraine, energy security and inflation, which is affecting many countries were the main topics discussed during the Polish-Spanish intergovernmental consultations held on Wednesday 27 July in Warsaw.

“We discussed how important it is for Ukraine to maintain its sovereignty, territorial integrity and its independence. Poland is doing everything it can to make this happen, but Madrid, despite being three thousand kilometres away from Ukraine, has also risen to the challenge”, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who co-chaired the consultations with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

“The governments of both countries pledge to use available EU mechanisms to improve Europe’s endangered security. Increasing military support to Ukraine and addressing capacity shortfalls without delay are of the utmost importance, including the effective use of the increased budget of the European Peace Facility, which has confirmed the complementarity of EU action and NATO’s deterrence policy”, says the joint Polish-Spanish declaration.

The head of the Polish government stressed that the two countries also have a common position on gas.

“Spain understands perfectly well the need to become independent from Russian gas, it is in this better situation than Poland as its dependence was also much lower before”, says Prime Minister Morawiecki.

In conclusion, in addition to the joint declaration of the 14th Polish-Spanish intergovernmental consultations, the following assumptions were also adopted: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Spain in the field of defence and a Joint Declaration by the Minister of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda of the Kingdom of Spain and the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Republic of Poland for the Central Communications Port ‘Solidarność’.
