The programme of the 17th AfryKamera Festival will include art and genre cinema, meetings with guests, debates, an exhibition, music and dance workshops, children’s activities, an African market, and concerts. The 17th Festival has been co-financed by the Polish Film Institute; it will take place from 30 September to 9 October 2022 in Warsaw’s Kinoteka and online (22-31 October) on the VOD.Warszawa platform, as well as in eight other Polish cities.
The AfryKamera Festival is the largest event in Central and Eastern Europe dedicated to African culture. This year’s film programme focuses on two topics: “Africa mon amour” and “The roots of music”. The films include the best film of the year in Africa – Khadar Ayderus Ahmed’s ‘The Gravedigger’s Wife’ (Somalia) or Amil Shivji’s ‘Thirsting for Love’ (Zanzibar / Tanzania). The 2021 Karlovy Vary winner a Serbian drama ‘As Far As I Can Walk’ will also appear.
The second thematic strand of the festival, related to music, will be represented by documentaries about the importance of trends such as afrobeat, rumba and morna, performed by the biggest stars of past decades. It will be possible to watch the film “Kings of Rumba” by Alan Brainr (Peru / Congo) or the biographical picture “Cesária Évora” by Ana Sofia Fonseca. The guests will be also able to watch a documentary on Nigeria,’The Elderly’s Alley’ directed by Siji Awoyinka. There will also be a theme of Afrofuturism, hence the presence in the programme of, among others, a 1974 science fiction film. ‘Space is the Place’ by John Coney.
In addition to Warsaw, screenings as part of the AfryKamera Festival will also take place in such cities as Szczecin, Wrocław, Łódź, Konin, Rzeszów, Kraków, Białystok and Gorzów Wielkopolski.
