Polish aviation in increasingly good condition. Chopin Airport checked in more than 10 million passengers in a year

by Dignity News
Almost 10.7 million passengers have been checked in at Poland’s largest airport – Warsaw’s Fryderyk Chopin Airport since the beginning of the year. This is only 25.5 % less than in the same pre-pandemic period of 2019.

The vast majority of passengers, almost 7 million people, chose to travel with traditional carriers. During the holiday months of June to September, charters were chosen by 1.35 million passengers – almost 7% more than in the same period of 2019. From January to the end of September, 1.82 million people flew for holidays.

September, as the last holiday month, ended with 1.59 million checked in passengers. This represents 85 % of the total number achieved in September 2019. With 20% fewer flight operations, this means better filling of aircraft. The highest number of passengers in a single day was checked in on Sunday, 18 September – 57,937. This was only 4,225 fewer passengers than on the same day in 2019.

More than 90% of passengers travelled internationally from Chopin Airport, 60% of them to Schengen countries. The top five most popular regular destinations are London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Munich. The list of ‘Top 5’ charter destinations opens with Turkey’s Antalya, followed by Egypt’s Hurghada and Marsa Alam and Greece’s Rhodes and Heraklion.

The largest carrier for scheduled traffic is PLL LOT, which has a total of almost 5.5 million passengers at Warsaw Airport. The largest charter carrier is Enter AIR, which handled 756,000 passengers.

Cargo transport – both in the form of belly cargo (i.e. on board scheduled aircraft) and all cargo (cargo-only operations) are breaking new records – 76,608 tonnes is 9 % better than the result from the same period in 2019. After the pandemic break, the mail transport segment is also slowly recovering, with 6,662 tonnes of correspondence transported between January and the end of September.
