In 2021, the value of the market for plant substitutes for animal products, including meat and dairy products, increased to PLN 1.5 billion in Poland. Even foodtech experts did not expect such a hike. The rapid development of categories and changes in consumer preferences will force retail chains to change their assortment policy.
According to the data from GfK Polonia, in Poland, the value of the market of plant substitutes for animal products in 2021 amounted to PLN 1.5 billion. This means that sales of meat alternatives have doubled, and in terms of plant-based dairy products, the increase was 40%. According to experts, the value of the market may even exceed PLN 2 billion in 2022.
According to Wiadomości Handlowe, the market for plant meat substitutes is driven by new products and new brands that appear on the market. On the shelves of shops clients can find, pea, beetroot, mushroom burgers, sunflower burgers, chickpea and bean ducats, vegetable sausages, meatballs and black pudding, or vegetable yoghurts.
According to experts and analysts, this is just the beginning of the upcoming changes, and retail chains must prepare to meet the challenge of changing the eating habits and diets of Polish consumers.
Experts can see how the first chains react to new trends in the Polish market. Carrefour and Bezmięsny Company are launching the first meatless counters in Poland, providing a wide selection of vegan meat substitutes.
“Meatless Counter is a breakthrough step for the development of the entire segment of vegetable meat substitutes in Poland”, says Igor Sadurski, co-founder and board member of Bezmięsny.
It is also worth noting that the international non-profit organization ProVeg International, which deals with building nutritional awareness, supported the latest IPCC report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which stated that one of the largest individual contributions to reducing emissions is adopting a sustainable, healthy a diet that includes reducing meat and dairy consumption by eating a more plant-based diet.
