On Tuesday, April 5, Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak will sign a contract for the supply of 250 M1A2 Abrams tanks in their latest SEPv3 version, with a modified hull and turret structure, and with new electronic systems for the Polish army.
The III generation M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks will have a system that allows for cooperation with HIMARS launchers and F-35 aircraft. They will also have the ability to use programmable ammunition.
Along with 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, Poland will also buy, 26 M88A2 Hercules technical support vehicles, 17 M1110 assault bridges, 250 Counter Remote Controlled Improvised Explosive Device AN / VLQ-12 Duke systems, 276 large-caliber M2 12.7 mm machine guns and 500 M240C machine guns, and CROWS-LP remote firing positions. In addition, Poland purchased spare parts for Abrams, including 15 spare AGT1500 gas turbines, as well as simulators and trainers. The contract also includes school and logistics services.
A month ago, the US authorities approved the transaction. It amounts to USD 6 billion, which is the maximum amount in the case of sale in the FMS formula (sale of weapons used by the American armed forces).
In Poland, M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 will be received by the 18th Mechanized Division, whose brigades are currently equipped with Leopard and T-72 tanks. Apart from the American land forces, Poland will be the only user of this tank in Europe.
