In June 2023, the Małopolskie and Śląskie voivodeships will host the 3rd European Games. The letter of intent on the organization of the European Games in 2023 in Małopolska and Silesia on behalf of the State Treasury was signed by the minister of sport and tourism, Kamil Bortniczuk. The hosts of the event bringing together a total of 24 sports disciplines will be Krakow, Chorzów, Krynica Zdrój, Tarnów and Zakopane. Nearly 7.5 thousand athletes from 50 national teams will participate in this sports event.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is convinced that this event will inspire Poland and Poles to reach greater heights in international sports. It is an opportunity to demonstrate great qualities and skills, both in sports as well as in operational and organizational terms.
The organization of the European Games involves simultaneous investments in sports facilities and road infrastructure in the Małopolskie and Śląskie voivodships. The most important works will include the modernization of the existing facilities and the implementation of the modernization program for roads, pavements and bicycle paths in Krakow.
The expenditure related to the organization of the 2023 European Games was estimated at PLN 400 million. Half of the costs will be covered by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism. The Małopolskie Voivodeship and the city of Kraków equally will add the remaining 50%. The total sum of expenses in both cases will not exceed PLN 100 million.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki summed up that Kraków and the Małopolska voivodship will build and modernize their sports facilities and infrastructure which will allow organizing the sports event at the highest world level.
The Krakow-Małopolska 2023 European Games will be held on June 21 – July 2, 2023.
