“I will ask for support for Poland’s efforts to obtain war reparations and for the US Congress to take action to investigate the asymmetry in Germany’s treatment of countries wronged during World War II”, Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk wrote on Twitter.
The deputy head of Polish diplomacy, on Tuesday 10 January, announced another important initiative that involves internationalising the issue of reparations.
“Today, we are addressing the US Congress. We believe that the USA is a country that stands for the global order, a key country when it concerns the issues of observance of the international order, human rights, the rule of law and international justice”, said Arkadiusz Mularczyk and specified that in this matter he intends to address the Chairman of the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress, Senator Benjamin Cardin, Congressman Gregory Meeks – Chairman of the Congressional Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Robert Menendez – Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur – Co-Chairwoman of the Polish-American Friendship Group.
According to Deputy Minister Mularczyk, Germany has systematically avoided and continues to avoid entering talks with Poland. Meanwhile, under the terms of the Potsdam Conference, Germany has, through international agreements, provided compensation and reparation benefits to the states of Western Europe as well as to certain international communities.
“There were no such compensations towards Poland, and for years Germany avoided concluding a bilateral agreement with Poland and resolving the reparations issue”, he stated. Poland also did not participate in any international format “during which the payment of war reparations to Poland would have taken place”.
