Poland remaining a leader in NATO in defense spending, says Minister of National Defense

Poland remains a leader in NATO in terms of defense investments spending 2.34% of GDP on the Polish Armed Forces last year. According to the NATO report “Defense Expenditure of NATO Countries”, this means that Poland takes third place in the Alliance in this respect” informed the head of the Ministry of National Defense (MON) Mariusz Błaszczak on Twitter. 

The Information Radio Agency informed that a contract for the supply of Abrams tanks will be signed on Tuesday. The signing of the documents relating to the contract will take place in the 1st Armored Brigade in Warsaw. The event will be attended by Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak, representatives of the American administration and a tank manufacturer from the Ohio factory. The contract is worth over PLN 23 billion. It also includes a logistics and training package as well as the purchase of ammunition for tanks. 

According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, the legal base allowing the government to increase the Polish Army is contained in the Act on the Defense of the Fatherland. The Act signed by the president concerns increasing the defense budget. It states that the state budget will allocate funds in the amount not lower than 2.2 % of GDP to finance defense needs in 2022 and at least 3% of GDP in 2023 and subsequent years. 

“We will rearm the Polish Army, we will equip the Polish Army with the modern weapons and we will also expand the Polish Army. Our goal is 300,000. soldiers including 250,000 soldiers of operational troops, professional soldiers, and 50,000 soldiers of the territorial defense forces”, emphasized Minister Błaszczak. 

According to the Act, the head of the Ministry of National Defense plans expenditure on the technical modernization of the army, taking into account the Polish industrial defense potential and expenditure on research and development work for state defense.
