Daniel Obajtek, CEO of PKN Orlen, announced that the company has received approval from the West Pomeranian Voivode to build an installation terminal for offshore wind farms in Świnoujście.
“Three months after the decision to build an installation terminal for offshore wind farms in Świnoujście, we received approvals from the West Pomeranian Voivode, enabling us to start work. The terminal will be ready as early as 2025, supporting the implementation of our offshore projects”, wrote the PKN Orlen CEO on Twitter.
Orlen Group’s investment in the construction of the terminal is crucial from the point of view of both the Baltic Power project’s harmony-gram and further projects in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea planned by Orlen Neptun until 2040.
The terminal’s approximately 20 ha of land will be supplied with offshore wind farm components, including turbines manufactured by Vestas. Each of the two quays available will allow for the pre-assembly of wind turbine towers over 100 metres high and weighing around 1,000 tonnes each.
The length of the quays, both 250 metres, will allow the largest specialist jack-up vessels currently available for the installation of offshore wind farm components to operate. According to the plan, the port will become operational in 2025 and will employ around 100 people during the installation work.
The first project to be developed using the terminal will be the Baltic Power farm with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW. It will be located approximately 23 km from the coast at Choczewo and Łeba. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Baltic Power will use 76 turbines of 15 MW each, supplied by Vestas.
The cooperation with Vestas provides for the installation of the turbines and the provision of their full service for 15 years. In addition, the company, recognising the potential for further development of offshore wind projects in Poland, has decided to locate a factory for offshore wind farm turbine components in Szczecin.
