Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and the US company Westinghouse Electric Company have signed an agreement specifying the principles of cooperation in preparing the process of building the first nuclear power plant in Poland.

In the presence of Anna Moskwa – Minister of Climate and Environment, Mateusz Berger – Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure and Marek Brzezinski – US Ambassador to Poland, President of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) Tomasz Stępień and President of Westinghouse Electric Company Energy Systems (WEC) David Durham signed a Cooperation Agreement following the Polish government’s selection of the US WEC AP1000 technology to build Poland’s first nuclear power plant.

The agreement sets out the main principles and next business steps to be taken by PEJ and WEC in 2023. It assumes key tasks to be carried out such as negotiating and signing contracts for an engineering services agreement, which will include preparatory and conceptual work, including preliminary design work, support services for obtaining permits and approvals, services related to site organisation planning and construction procurement and planning. The next step in the project will be to sign a contract in 2023 for the design of a nuclear power plant to be built in Pomerania.

In 2021, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, after a series of studies and analyses on an unprecedented scale, identified ‘Lubiatowo-Kopalino’ in Pomerania as the preferred location for a power plant with a capacity of up to 3750 MWe. In 2022, the company submitted the so-called environmental report to the General Director of Environmental Protection, necessary to obtain an environmental decision which is one of the decisions needed to start construction.
