Nearly two-thirds of the gas extracted by Orlen Group on the Norwegian Continental Shelf will come from facilities powered by renewable energy supplied from land via subsea power lines next year.

Without onshore supply, the energy needed to operate offshore production platforms is generated by burning exploited natural gas. Switching to onshore-generated electricity effectively means a transition to zero-carbon energy – 98 % of the electricity produced in Norway comes from renewable sources.

“Norway is a key market for us when it comes to securing natural gas supplies to Poland. We are consistently developing our production potential there. In November, we signed an agreement for the purchase of Kufpec Norway, thanks to which Orlen Group’s gas extraction in Norway will increase by as much as one-third – to over 4 bcm per year from next year”, said Orlen’s CEO Daniel Obajtek.

Orlen Group manages refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, has retail operations in Central Europe, upstream operations in Poland, Norway, Canada and Pakistan, as well as energy production, including from RES, and natural gas distribution. As part of building a multi-utility conglomerate, the company finalised the acquisitions of Energa, Lotos Group and PGNiG. Its consolidated sales revenue reached PLN 277.56 billion in 2022. The company has been listed on the WSE since 1999; it is part of the WIG20 index.

Thanks to the electrification of the Gina Krog, Ormen Lange and Duva fields, PGNiG Upstream Norway will avoid 88,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions next year (compared to the scenario if the fields were still being developed with platforms powered in the standard way). According to the strategy, by 2030. Orlen Group intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the exploitation of oil and gas fields by 25 % compared to 2019 levels.
