Number of online banking users on the rise

by DignityNews.eu

More than half of people in Poland use online banking. In 2022, it was 56 %, which is 4 % less than the average in the European Union (60 %). Leading countries are Finland (95 %), Denmark (94 %) and the Netherlands (91 %). „Only six EU countries have fewer people using online banking than Poland: Greece, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania”, reports the Polish Economic Institute.

The percentage of people using online banking is growing year on year. Poland has seen a more than threefold increase in the last 15 years. In 2007, only 13 % of people in Poland used online banking. Intuition suggests that the pandemic may have significantly intensified this process, because of the transfer of various activities to the Internet. However, the data shows that this is primarily a long-term trend. In and after the pandemic, the use of online banking also increased, but it was not a quantum leap.

According to the latest NetB@nk report, which deals with online and mobile banking, the number of active users of banking mobile applications at the end of Q3 2022 was almost 19 million in Poland. This represents an increase of 3.5 % in relation to Q2, and as much as 18% in relation to Q3 2021. The number of customers actively using e-banking also increased in the same quarter, and there are now 21.8mn such users.

In Poland, older people use online banking relatively rarely. In the 55-64 age group, it is 42 %, and in the 65-74 age group it is only 22 %. In contrast, the highest percentage of online banking users is among people aged 25-34. This amounts to 76 % in Poland and is even higher than the EU average (73 %).
