According to a report by research company Olsberg SPI, a total of 367 feature films, documentaries, animated and short films will be made in Poland in 2022. This is a record in recent years and the highest number of productions since 2019. Expenditure on the production of Polish films and series already exceeds PLN 2.5 billion annually and has a significant impact on the national economy.
The report was prepared by British experts in cooperation with the National Chamber of Audiovisual Producers with the support of Dr Marta Materska-Samek from Jagiellonian University.
The output of the Polish film industry is internationally recognised and the names of directors and filmmakers such as Andrzej Wajda, Agnieszka Holland, Krzysztof Kieślowski and Paweł Pawlikowski are widely known. However, in addition to international fame, the production of series and films in Poland is becoming an important part of the economy and is starting to bring tangible economic benefits.
As highlighted, one PLN spent on audiovisual production in Poland generates an economic impact of nearly 3.5 PLN, and every year the production industry creates the equivalent of over 21,000 jobs.
According to the report, Poland has been experiencing a boom in film and series production in recent years, and this sector of the economy has been growing steadily. The data shows that the number of entrepreneurs involved in film and TV production in Poland has been growing steadily in recent years, exceeding 12,000 companies in 2022. It was also a record-breaking year in terms of the number of films produced – Polish filmmakers made a total of 367 films, 112 of which were feature-length films and 255 were medium and short films.
Olsberg SPI points out that broadcasters’ spending on Polish films and series has also been growing steadily in Poland since 2015 – by an average of 8% per year. The emergence of streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Viaplay and Player.pl has also had a significant impact on investment in the audiovisual market. Together, traditional broadcasters and streaming services spent more than PLN 2.5 billion on Polish original content in 2022.
