The Minister of Development and Technology, Piotr Nowak, announced that the American administration supports the idea of removing Russia from the G-20 group and replacing it with Poland. Poland proposes to remove Russia for attacking Ukraine.
Minister Nowak says that Poland’s proposal to remove Russia from the G-20 group and replace it with Poland was met with great understanding by representatives of the American administration. Gina Raimondo, the US secretary of trade, declared that she would hand it over to President Joe Biden, and the idea itself was very well received.
Nowak visited the USA in mid-March and met with representatives of the US Department of State and US Department of Commerce. Poland’s membership in the G-20 was one of the topics of the talks.
Nowak argued that Poland’s admission to the group would be a mark of success for Western institutions, showing how they had effectively supported Poland’s post-communist transition over the last three decades.
“Entering the G20 would show that, with such support, a [post-]communist country is able to become one of the fastest developing countries in the world within 30 years,” he said.
Removing Russia from the G20 will not be easy. The decision of the other members must be unanimous, and there is a high risk that some countries may block it. These are mainly China, Indonesia (which now presides G20) and India.
“However, the idea in the USA is liked so much that the United States would be ready to leave the G-20 and work towards establishing a new organization. Such suggestions were made in backstage conversations”, reports Nowak.
The G-20 group includes the 19 most developed countries in the world and the European Union. The members include the United States, China, India and Russia. Poland has been striving for membership in the club for years, but so far unsuccessfully, although representatives of the Polish government have already been invited several times to the G-20 as observers.
Now, however, Polish membership in this elite group is closer than ever. Russia’s removal from the club is supported by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
