Latest research by the Public Opinion Research Centre confirms that young Poles do not want to have children

by Dignity News
The Centre for Public Opinion Research (CBOS) asked Poles about their plans and expectations regarding having children. The survey shows that among the youngest respondents (18-24 years old), the percentage of those who do not want to have children at all amounts to 21%. The reluctance to have children applies equally to women and men (7% of indications each in the overall sample).

Poland is among the 15 countries in the world with the lowest fertility rate with only 1.40 rate in 2020. For comparison, in France, the country in Europe with the highest rate, it is 2.03. In Europe, the rate is worse than in Poland only in three countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina (1.36), Spain (1.27) and Italy (1.22), according to CIA data.

The fertility rate defines the average number of children that a woman would give birth to over the entire childbearing period – assuming that during the various phases of this period she would give birth with the intensity observed among women in the year under the study.

Groups that are more likely than others to not to plan to have children are those who are not religiously active (17 %), those who identify with the left political views (16 %) and those with an income of more than PLN 4,000 per person in the family (14 %)”.

54 % of respondents are those who believe they have as many children as they wanted. Only 5% of respondents declared that they had more children than they preferred, according to CBOS. But the percentage of respondents who indicated that they would like to have more children is also significant. This is as high as 41 % of the asked people. Thus, four in ten Poles would like to have more offspring, but do not currently choose to do so.

The survey was conducted on a representative personal sample of adult residents of Poland, drawn from the PESEL register. The survey was conducted between 27 June and 7 July 2022 on a sample of 1,084 people.
