In the spring, in-depth field work to be undertaken prior to the construction of a Polish nuclear power plant

by Dignity News

In the spring, in-depth geological surveys will begin at the coastal site of Lubiatowo-Kopalino prior to the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The investigations at the site will help to detect unexploded ordnance and develop the design of the future power plant.

Field work at the site of the future nuclear power plant will take place in stages. Firstly, the site will be surveyed to a depth of 6 metres for possible unexploded munitions. According to the company Polish Nuclear Power Plants (PEJ), this examination will take place under archaeological and nature supervision.

Once possible World War II munitions have been detected and neutralised, the site will be cleared. Site clearance work will be carried out at the location where the nuclear power plant will be built. The company points out that it is in constant contact with the Choczewo Forestry Commission, which manages the area covered by the field work.

PEJ’s partner, the US company Bechtel, is responsible for the field survey, which will begin in the spring. Information on the geology of the site will be used by Westinghouse and Bechtel to develop the design of the nuclear power plant.

The construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant is a strategic project to preserve energy security. Nuclear energy is intended to be a counterbalance to the fossil fuels that dominate in Poland. Energy supplies will be distributed to companies and households.

The investment will also result in positive changes for the Choczewo municipality. Local authorities will feel the financial boost from taxes flowing into the budget. In addition, the area will gain an expanded infrastructure in the form of roads and rail links. The immediate good news for the residents of the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location is the creation of a number of new jobs.
