In May, more Ukrainians returned to Ukraine than left it

The State Border Service of Ukraine, quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine agency, reported that from 9 to 25 May the number of people returning to Ukraine via the western border exceeded the number of people leaving the country.

On Wednesday, almost 35,000 people left and 40,000 returned to Ukraine. A day earlier, 32,000 people left the country. and 37,000 returned to it. According to the Border Service, there is a noticeable tendency the increase in the number of people returning to the country.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that more than 6.6 million people have left Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion. According to the data of the Ukrainian border guard, a total of over 2.1 million Ukrainians returned to the country since February 28.

The short film, published by the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, shows Ukrainian refugees in Poland announcing that they will return to their country after the war.

“We will come back because there is nothing better than home. And we will definitely invite Poles to us to thank them”, wrote the wife of the President of Ukraine in the film titled “I will come back”,

Ołena Zelenska noted that Poland has already sheltered about 3 million Ukrainian refugees, providing them not only with a temporary place to live but also permanent care, free medicines and education, reported Ukrinform agency, discussing the First Lady’s entry.

“We are unlucky with one of the neighbours who proves “brotherhood” with missile strikes and terror. But we are very lucky to have another neighbour, Poland, which has become Ukraine’s closest friend, not only geographically”, she emphasized.

The Polish Border Guard informed that over 22,000 people entered Poland from Ukraine on Thursday. Compared to the previous day, the number of refugees increased by 2%. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 3,636,000 people have fled the war to Poland.
