General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways summarised 2023

In 2023, 266.5 km of new roads were opened to traffic and drivers now can use 5115.6 km of motorways, including 1849.2 km of motorways and 3266.4 km of expressways, announced the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

In September 2023, with the opening to traffic of 48 km of the new S11 between Koszalin and Bobolice, Poland surpassed the barrier of 5,000 km of motorways and expressways. At the end of the year, the odometer stopped at 5115.6 km.

The year 2023 is not only about the S11 in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The entry to Warsaw from the south and the access to Kraków from the north have been facilitated, the Łódź bypass has been closed, and sections of the expressway connecting Koszalin and Katowice have been extended. On top of this, the former DK18 has become a fully-fledged motorway over its entire length, and the last section of the Via Baltica is under construction.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has 103 projects with a total length of 1298.6 km. Currently, 34 tasks with a total length of 435.2 km under the National Roads Construction Programme (PBDK) and nine bypasses with a length of 72 km under the government’s Programme for the Construction of 100 Bypasses for 2020-2030 (PB100) are under tender proceedings.

In 2023, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) announced tenders for the construction of42 sections of new roads with a total length of 530.6 km and signed 16 contracts for tasks with a total length of 216 km and a value of around PLN 8.6 billion.

Since 1 January 2023, GDDKiA has signed16 contracts for the implementation of roads with a total length of 216km and a value of around PLN 8.6bn. Among them, 13 agreements are contracts from the PBDK with a total length of 194km and a value of PLN 8.2bn, three are for bypasses from the PB100 with a length of 21.9km and a value of nearly PLN 400m.

At the end of November 2023, the GDDKiA’s investment expenditure amounted to more than PLN 13.9 billion, an increase of more than 11% year-on-year.

As the Directorate General for National Roads and Motorways notes, this is the second highest result in the last six years, after the record-breaking 2020. The projected completion at the end of 2023 will be around PLN 15 billion.
