The largest floating photovoltaic installation in Poland and one of the largest in Europe will be built on the rainwater retention reservoirs at the unfinished nuclear power plant in Żarnowiec. “This is another project of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSSE) aimed at energy transformation and independence”, reports the PSSE.
Chief marketing officer of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone Monika Fabich said that the PSSE has signed an agreement with Antamion to develop the technical documentation and obtain the necessary permits for a large floating photovoltaic installation with a capacity of at least 7 MW.
“The installation will be located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, on the site of the unfinished power plant in Żarnowiec, on rainwater retention reservoirs. The ‘green energy’ flowing from it will be delivered to the electricity grid and will power the surrounding businesses and households and will also contribute to reducing environmentally harmful carbon dioxide emissions”, noted Fabich.
The areas in Żarnowiec, where the construction of a Polish nuclear power plant began in the 1980s, were not used for many years.
“We saw the potential in them and decided to give them a second life by giving a new role to the hitherto unused rainwater retention reservoirs. The floating photovoltaic farm is still an innovative technical solution. If it does not cover the entire surface area of the reservoir, it poses no threat or limitation to the biology and processes of life in the water. Undoubtedly, it is a highly innovative and energy-efficient solution – photovoltaic panels have a much higher efficiency of electricity production in such an environment due to the lower operating temperature and they make secondary use of the light reflected from the water table”, said Maciej Kazienko, Vice-President of the Board of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone.
