Entire A1 motorway is toll-free for passenger vehicles and motorbikes

by Dignity News
Since 4 September, the entire A1 motorway has been free of charge for passenger vehicles and motorbikes. There is no need to pay to drive the 567-kilometre-long route from the Polish-Czech border crossing in Gorzyczki to Gdańsk.

Not charging tolls on the A1 is aimed at implementing the policy of ensuring the safety of public road users in Poland and increasing the mobility of Poles. According to the government, the resolution on the toll-free A1 is aimed at saving drivers the money they have spent so far on travelling to work and on holidays.

“As announced, we are continuing the policy of making motorways free of tolls for cars and motorbikes. State sections are already free of charge, we have introduced a holiday exemption for the A1 between Gdańsk and Toruń, and the government has in recent days adopted a resolution to exempt this section from tolls also after 4 September 2023. The big improvement is that tolls will not be charged on all days of the week”, said Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk.

The right to receive a free pass will be granted on the basis of a so-called zero-toll ticket. A ticket will have to be collected at the entrance to the motorway and then handed to the ticket collector at the exit. Drivers registered in the AmberGO system, which allows registration numbers to be identified without the need to collect a ticket, will drive up to the barrier at the exit and, once the green light comes on, will continue their journey without being charged a toll.

The abolition of motorway tolls for cars and motorbikes has shifted some traffic from alternative roads onto them. This is already translating into improved safety on roads in the vicinity of motorways, which were chosen by drivers because of motorway tolls. The benefits of such a solution entail significant savings for frequent motorway users.
