Pomeranian Voivode Dariusz Drelich has issued a decision to indicate a location for a nuclear power plant. It will enable the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to carry out detailed studies necessary for the drafting of the location report. The nuclear power plant, with an electrical capacity of up to 3750 MWe, is to be built in the area of the Choczewo municipality.
“The nuclear power plant being built in Pomerania will affect positively the stability of the power supply, balance the projected increase in electricity demand and ensure energy sovereignty. It is an investment in the future, harmonious development and, most importantly, safety. I would like to congratulate all the people involved in the investment process”, said Pomeranian voivode Dariusz Drelich.
The decision to indicate the location was issued in order for PEJ to carry out in-depth geological research necessary to prepare a location report and obtain a construction permit issued by the President of the State Atomic Energy Agency. The received decision to indicate the location of the investment does not prejudge its final determination.
In July, the investment received the green light from the Ministry of Climate and Environment. This meant that the project was in line with public interest and the state’s energy policy. In August this year, the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) applied to the Pomeranian Voivode for a location decision.
As part of the Polish Nuclear Power Programme, two nuclear power plants are planned to be built and the power plant in Pomerania is the first of them. PEJ, a special purpose company set up to coordinate the construction process, is responsible for the investment. In December 2021, the 100 % state-owned company identified the coastal location of Lubiatowo-Kopalino in the Choczewo municipality as the preferred location for Poland’s first nuclear power plant, to be built using Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology and consisting of three units.
