The Ministry of Climate and Environment has announced that Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa has issued a decision in principle at the request of PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa to build a second nuclear power plant in Poland in cooperation with the Korean company KHNP.
The decision is “an expression of the state’s acceptance of the investment intention presented by the investor for the construction of a nuclear power facility”. It is issued after the Minister of Climate and Environment approves the compliance of the investment with the public interest, in particular with the objectives of the state policy, including energy policy, and the lack of negative impact of the investment on the internal security of the state.
“I am glad that by obtaining the fundamental decision we will be able to continue work on the nuclear power plant construction project in Konin/Pątnów. This investment is a chance for Poland, the region and, above all, for us Poles – because nuclear energy means stable, clean and cheap energy for Polish families and companies for the next few decades”, said Zygmunt Solorz, the main shareholder of ZE PAK and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa.
The power plant will be built in Pątnów near Konin as a joint project of the Polish Energy Group (PGE), Zespół Elektrowni Pątnów Adamów Konin (ZE PAK) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP). According to the assumptions, it is to be built using APR 1400 technology by 2035. Company representatives state that it is a safe and proven technology. According to the plan, the two reactors with a total capacity of 2,800 MW will supply 22 TWh of energy. This corresponds to 12 % of Poland’s current electricity demand.
