Copper production to be environmentally safe

The Medical Council of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. summarised the key activities of KGHM in energy transformation and climate protection projects aimed at improving the safety and quality of life of employees and the inhabitants of the Copper Belt.

“Sustainable development activities for people and the environment are a priority for KGHM. Energy transformation opens the door to a green future and is an opportunity for us and the Polish economy. As one of the world’s leaders in the production of copper and silver, KGHM is developing its activities responsibly. We are aware that copper is a key element of the transformation”, said Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.

The copper company is running several projects to reduce gas emissions and diversify the company’s energy sources. KGHM’s targets are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 and to achieve complete climate neutrality by 2050. Over the next seven years, the company will aim to meet 50% of the company’s energy needs from its own sources – including RES. Currently the operation of KGHM’s steam-gas units covers around 20% of the Company’s demand for electricity.

In diversifying its sources of electricity, KGHM is also relying on energy from the sun, wind, and hydrogen. It builds photovoltaic power plants but is also active in offshore wind power. The company is involved in the development of nuclear energy in the country. Last year, it submitted the first application for the evaluation of small modular reactor (SMR) technology in Poland to the State Atomic Energy Agency.

The Medical Council of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. was established in 2019. It is composed of renowned physicians and scientists from the most important scientific centres in Poland.
