Application of Polish students to reorganize public transport in Abu Dhabi

Students from the SMART CITY Interdepartmental Science Club of the Warsaw University of Technology at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology and the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology DATA SCIENCE CLUB took second place in the competition organized by the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority. Polish students created a program to reorganize the entire public transport system in Abu Dhabi.

In Open Data ADDATHON, teams from around the world received data sets to develop solutions that could improve the quality of life of Abu Dhabi’s residents, and support local businesses or government.

Aleksandra Jamróz, a student at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, was inspired by the words of the former mayor of Bogota that a developed city is not where the poor drive cars, but where the rich use public transport.

Students decided to create a project that uses databases and artificial intelligence to analyze the timetable of stops and travel costs. The solution will help commuters make an informed decision by presenting to them the level of efficiency and profitability of various means of transport.

Their application combines two functionalities. The program tells the user which means of transport is more profitable on a given route (after entering the starting and ending addresses, the system automatically compares the time and cost of a taxi and public transport). In addition, the application proposes a new location of the stops (based on the available parameters, such as the current timetable of stops, the location of tourist attractions, the frequency of use of specific stops and the distance between them). The application allows also buying directly a bus ticket and ordering a taxi.
