Aid from Poland is the second largest support that Ukrainians receive from Western countries

by Dignity News
The Kiel Institute, a German think tank dealing with economic research, announced that Polish aid for Ukraine is one of the largest in terms of its value in billions of euros and the size of donor economies.

Information on the amount of support is received from the Ukraine Support Tracker, prepared and constantly updated by a German think tank. The lists mainly include state aid. Information on support from the Kiel Institute has been gathered from official government sources and public and reputable media. Think tank focuses on financial transfers, but also on arms and food supplies.

“This version of the database does not include other types of support, in particular the costs of helping refugees who have fled from Ukraine, or donations from private individuals, companies, churches or NGOs. We have not (yet) systematically collected information on support from international organizations such as the Red Cross or the United Nations, mainly due to the lack of systematic data and reporting from most of such international organizations”, inform Kiel Institute experts.

The analysis of the data shows that Poland is one of the leaders among the countries supporting Ukraine, and Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP) has the major merits in this aid. According to the Kiel Institute, support from Poland amounts to almost EUR 1 billion and is primarily financial transfers. In terms of the value of aid, Poland ranks second after the United States, whose aid to Ukrainians amounts to EUR 7.6 billion.

Such a high result for Poland is almost entirely due to an agreement concluded between the Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP) and the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) assuming the so-called currency swap, under which Poland provided Ukrainians with one billion dollars in exchange for hryvnias, at a fixed rate. A swap is a transaction of delivering a currency in exchange for another with the agreed terms of the reverse operation.

The Kiel Institute also calculated how much help is worth in relation to the size of the economies of the assisting countries. In this respect, Estonia is second to none, which allocates almost 0.8% of its GDP to support Ukraine. Poland is number two with less than 0.2% of Polish GDP. The leaders are also Lithuania (0.05%) and Slovakia (0.05%).

Ukraine Support Tracker is a tool for analyzing military, financial and humanitarian aid provided to Ukraine by 31 Western countries, especially the G-7 countries and members of the European Union. The last data update took place on April 14.
