Achievements of the “WISS”, i.e. Intelligence and Information of the Grey Ranks

by Dignity News
During the Second World War, the scouts involved in intelligence and information activities (WISS for short) worked closely with Branch II of the Home Army Headquarters. The first co-ordinator and leader of this action was Zygfryd Linda alias “Firley”, later this role was performed by Jerzy Jaczewski alias “Wilk”. Both contributed to the development of the offensive intelligence of the Polish Underground State.

Scout intelligence officers were involved in the Combat Schools (BS), which were created to conduct service for “Today”, for “Tomorrow” and for “The Day After Tomorrow”. The former included: small-scale sabotage, Operation ‘N’ and information and intelligence activity. Young people aged between 15 and 17 took part in them.

The young intelligence officers were in charge of collecting the residential addresses of Germans and Volksdeutsche, as well as observing the movements of German troops, and military facilities (airports, railway stations, military warehouses, etc.). The data provided was so valuable that the leaders of the Polish Underground State decided to cooperate closely with some of the ensigns. For example, the intelligence of the Pomeranian Ensign was linked to the “Alpha”, or Naval Intelligence of the AK Headquarters, and even to the “Anna” unit of the – the AK intelligence base in Sweden.

The two ensigns achieved the most important accomplishments. The Wielkopolska unit provided the first information about a mysterious facility in Peenemünde on the island of Usedom. The Pomeranian unit handed over a fragment of the German plan for central artillery control on the liner “Gneisenau”, a sketch of the Kriegsmarine telephone network in the port of Gdynia, plans for a B-4 motor torpedo, German naval reconnaissance boards, photographs of a radio-guided aerial torpedo, plans of the Gdynia war base and the fortification and minesweeping of Gdynia.
