According to the Polcard from Fiserv survey “Payment preferences of Poles 2024”, nearly three-quarters of Poles declare paying cashless for purchases in supermarkets. The next most popular cashless payment points are pharmacies (58 %) and petrol stations (57 %).
“As in the first our survey, supermarkets are the place where we pay most often by card, phone or watch”, was currently the answer given by 74 % of Poles. “Supermarkets are the most popular regardless of the respondents’ place of residence or education”, said Fiserv Polska CEO Krzysztof Polończyk.
Other places where respondents pay without cash are: pharmacies (58 %), petrol stations (57 %), beauty shops (47 %), small neighbourhood shops and bakeries (45 %) and restaurants (42 %). Poles are least likely to pay cashless at tutors or extra classes (4 %), as well as at shoemakers and tailors (6 %).
The survey also shows that consumers are keen to use additional services available at payment terminals, such as payments with loyalty cards, gift cards or vouchers (25 %), cash withdrawals from a shop’s checkout, so-called cashback (22 %), or phone recharges (17 %).
“When it comes to cashback, which is withdrawing cash from a shop’s till as if it were an ATM, 22 % of respondents used it and it ranks third in our survey. What is more, this service is most popular among the youngest respondents between the ages of 18 and 29, so we can predict that more and more people will use it in the future”, assessed Polończyk.
The survey was conducted using the standardised computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) method by the Institute for Market and Social Research (IBRiS) in January 2024 on a representative group of 1.000 adult Poles.
