Minister Czarnek expects the President to entrust the mission of government formation to the Right and Justice Party

by Dignity News
“I expect that the President will designate and appoint the Prime Minister from the winning party, i.e. Law and Justice”, said Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek in the programme “Gość Wydarzeń” on Polsat TV.

In the last elections, Przemysław Czarnek, running from the Law and Justice list in the Lublin district, won more than 121,000 votes.

He recalled that it is customary and a constitutional premise that the President entrusts the mission of forming a government to a representative of the winning party. He added that forming a government could be “difficult, but not impossible” and definitely easier for PiS than parties such as the Civic Coalition, the Third Way and the New Left.

‘We have seven weeks of talks ahead of us and I am sure we will observe many interesting situations yet’, Czarnek said, adding that, for example, on many issues he agrees with representatives of the hitherto opposition Polish People’s Party (PSL), which ran in the elections as part of the Third Way coalition.

“When I travelled around the Lublin region during the local government campaign, PSL activists repeatedly told me that they had exactly the same views. I told them openly that if the Law and Justice party had never been established and I had not been a member of it, I would probably have considered functioning in such a party as the PSL”, stated the head of the Ministry of Education and Science.

It should be recalled that Law and Justice won the elections with the support of more than 35 % of the voting citizens, giving 194 seats. The opposition parties, however, have more seats together. The Civic Coalition, with over 30.7 % support, won 157 seats, the Third Way, with over 14.4 % support, has 65 seats, and the Left, with 8.6 % support, has 26 seats. This makes a total of 248 seats, a secure majority in the Polish Sejm.

Opposition leaders claim that they are ready to form a coalition government and are awaiting the President’s decision on the matter.
